Over the weekend of the 25-26th August 2012, the Townsville Authentic Taekwon-do team travelled to Woy Woy to compete in the “Worldwide Taekwon-Do NSW/ACT State Championships”. This was round 3 towards the selection process for the World Championships held next year. The Championships has been confirmed as being held in the birthplace of Taekwon-do, Seoul, South Korea from 30th July- 6th August 2013, being moved from Florida due to an offer from the Korean government. North Queensland dominated the State Championships winning medals in all areas of competition.
The winners were as follows:
- Nigel Paul 6th Dan, Gold in Self Defence, Gold in above 4th Dan men’s Patterns, Gold in open men’s heavyweight sparring, silver in team sparring.
- Andrea Smith 5th Dan, Gold in Self Defence (partnered Nigel Paul), Gold in Woman’s Blackbelt patterns, Gold in open woman’s sparring, Gold in Woman’s power breaking.
- Ben Hetherington 3rd Dan, Gold Blackbelt power breaking.
- Susan Paul 1st Dan, Gold open woman’s special technique, Silver Woman’s Blackbelt Patterns.
- Nichole Doran 1st Gup, Gold Woman’s Gup Patterns, Gold Woman’s Open sparring, Silver woman’s Power breaking.
- Aliesha Smith 1st Gup, Bronze Woman’s Pattern, Bronze Open Woman’s Sparring, Silver Woman’s Power, Silver Woman’s Special Technique.
The next and final round including Australia Team selections will be held in Maroochydore on the 27th -28th October, in combination with a senior Dan testing where Instructors from New Zealand will test for 6th Dan and Townsville Instructor Ben Hetherington will test for 4th Dan International Instructor level. All team hopefuls will be training hard and making the trip to secure their spots in the squad.
